M.A.M.A., Inc. is a member of the McLean County Chamber of Commerce, Medical Group Management Association and American Medical Association. Our group is considered an Independent Practice Association (IPA), with physicians representing 18 different medical specialties in 37 different practices.

The McLean Area Medical Association was formed in 1993, in response to increasing concern among physicians over the direction that healthcare was going in McLean County, Illinois. The traditionally strong alliance shared by hospitals and physicians was strained to an extreme by increasing pressure placed on hospitals to conduct the "business" of delivering healthcare to the community. Employers and managed care organizations (insurance companies, HMO's, PPO's, etc.) were demanding deep discounts from hospitals and doctors in return for directing their employees or enrollees to those groups. Our local hospitals began buying physician practices, making these doctors employees of the hospital. The physicians who formed M.A.M.A., Inc. felt that independence of physicians from hospitals or managed care organizations was important to maintain a strong voice on behalf of our patients. With help from the Illinois State Medical Society, we obtained our charter. The response from the groups previously mentioned was imm ediate and almost overwhelming. We have negotiated contracts with hospitals and managed care groups which cover almost 34,000 patients. We have participated in community health awareness events, and have plans to conduct education programs for the general public regarding important health topics. Our numbers are growing as our mission and message spread. We feel that independent physicians are best qualified and are most able to navigate the troubled waters of our modern healthcare delivery system, keeping the patients best interests as our top priority.

Today, MAMA continues to serve the interests of our membership. Although the pressures facing the physicians may have changed since our inception in 1993, our commitment to providing local, high quality patient care has never wavered.
